stage directing
At the artistic Bachelor's programme in Theatre and Performance Making you can specialise in Stage Directing.
The stage director's role within the performing arts is multifaceted and depends on the production in question, but in general, the stage director holds overall artistic responsibility. This can be as an interpreter and communicator of other people's material, as a facilitator of co-creative processes, or as a scenic narrator with a strong, personal vision. Sometimes you will alternate between these roles within the same production.
To be a good stage director, you must want to tell stories dramatically. Collaboration with the actors is central, and you should be able to guide and inspire others and clearly communicate your artistic visions.
In the programme you will work on your unique style of storytelling and learn to translate your artistic intentions into stage material. You will strengthen your ability to work physically, visually and compositionally, either based on existing dramatic material; which you will gain methods to interpret, contextualise and translate to the stage; or in processes where you partake in creating new works from scratch. You will gain dramaturgical and analytical tools which you will continuously test in practice and in rehearsals with actors – both professionals and acting students.
The programme enables you to handle the artistic management of performing arts productions, and you will gain in-depth knowledge of the many professional groups involved in a production. Throughout the programme you will work on both large and smaller projects where you, as stage director, will work closely with students from the specialisations in lighting, sound and scenography to create the overall concept for the staging; and with students from all specialisations to develop and actualise the final performance. The larger productions will be presented to a public audience.
career and working life
As a stage director you can direct performances on large or smaller stages. You can also direct radio plays and other performative productions. Most stage directors work on a freelance basis and are hired for specific projects. At theatres, stage directors are often employed to be directors or artistic directors.
