At the artistic Bachelor's programme in Theatre and Performance Making you can specialise in Scenography.
As a scenographer, you work with the visual expression of performances. To be a scenographer, it is important that you have a good sense of space, think visually and are able to communicate and express yourself visually.
During the programme you’ll learn to design rooms and costumes for the performing arts. Among other things, you will work with idea development, conceptualisation, technical drawing, visual expression and communication in two and three dimensions.
As well as acquiring new practical skills, you will learn to use analytical methods as a starting point for your work and to reflect on your own practice.
Throughout the programme, your expertise will be brought into play in co-creative processes with students on other specialisations and programmes. You will work on both small projects and larger productions, learning to create scenography and costume concepts which form part of the overall concept of the staging and performance.
The first, second and third year projects are essentially full-scale productions as you would experience them in a professional production. These entail a longer process of ideas, sketches and model submissions, costume tests, technical tests, lighting and more. As a scenographer you are involved in every step of the process, from the earliest development of the work to the final realisation and presentation to an audience.
CAREER AND WORKING LIFE
Most scenographers are freelancers and are hired for specific projects. Permanent jobs are rare but do exist. As only two scenographers graduate each year, there is generally good opportunity for finding work in the field; at small and large institutional theatres or in the free performing arts, in Denmark or abroad. Some graduates go on to work in related fields such as exhibition design, and some continue their education in other settings – in film and TV scenography. Finally, there are scenographers who teach alongside their own artistic practice or set up their own companies with other stage artists and are self-producing.
