Prop Design and Production is an artistic bachelor’s programme within the field of performing arts production, where you train for the role as prop maker/props designer.

A prop maker is responsible for sourcing, creating, and maintaining props for a production. As a props designer/maker, you work closely with the stage director and scenographer to ensure that the props match the artistic expression of the performance and function effectively in practice.

During rehearsals and performances, the prop maker is often part of the stage crew, ensuring that all props are prepared and ready for use. They are also frequently responsible for repairing and replacing props throughout the entire production process.

In the programme, you learn to develop and produce props using a wide range of materials. You acquire craftsmanship skills and learn to work both creatively and practically. You also work with planning, collaboration, and communication, ensuring that the props seamlessly support the production as a whole.

You must enjoy working with your hands and be comfortable expressing yourself visually. You should have basic design skills and be able to think creatively and solution-oriented. In addition, you should be curious about cross-disciplinary collaboration in artistic development processes and about your own role within them, as well as open to exploring planning methods.

Teaching alternates between practice-based instruction, theoretical method training, and project work. You acquire new practical skills, learn to reflect on your own practice, and apply analytical methods as a basis for your work. Throughout the programme, your skills and knowledge are put into practice through collaborations with students from other programmes — including exercises, smaller projects, and larger productions.

The programme in prop design and production is within the field of performing arts production. Read more about the field here.

Employment

Graduates of the prop design and production programme are typically employed to work with props. Most graduates work in theatres or in related areas within the cultural sector. Many work as freelancers engaged for specific productions or projects, but there are also opportunities for permanent positions, especially at larger theatres.

Admission

Students are admitted once a year. Note that the application deadline typically falls already in December of the year before the programme begins. All students are admitted based on an entrance exam, where a selection committee evaluates applicants according to a number of criteria.
