APPLICATION GUIDE FOR THE MASTER'S PROGRAMME IN PERFORMING ARTS
The application deadline for the 2020 student intake has exceeded, and at the moment, it is not possible to apply for admission to the master's programme in Performing Arts. Next student intake will be in 2021. You will find information about the next application deadline on this site in fall 2020.
In 2020, DASPA will enroll around 15 students into the master’s programme in Performing Arts. Students will be admitted into one of two specialisations. You can submit an application to both specialisations:
- Creating Practice (Aarhus): 5 students
- Conceptualizing, Creating, Collaborating (Copenhagen): 10 students

The programme’s admission requirements are that applicants pass an audition and have undertaken an artistic education at a bachelor's level from the Danish National School of Performing Arts (three or four years) or another relevant Danish or foreign higher education institution. DASPA cannot grant dispensations from these requirements.
Admission is not possible based on general Danish university degrees or professional bachelor's degree programmes, since they are not built upon an artistic knowledge base. Private performing arts programmes from Denmark are not admissible as there are no private educational institutions within the performing arts sector accredited to offer bachelor’s level studies.
To be considered for an interview, applicants must have a bachelor’s level degree from:
- DASPA (three or four years)
- Another higher education institution overseen by the Ministry of Culture Denmark (kum.dk/policy-areas/education/)
- The schools of Visual Arts, Architecture, and Design run by The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, or Design School Kolding
- Similar higher education institutions abroad (e.g. norteasnetwork.org/members and ecoledesecoles.eu ).
There is no limit on the time that may elapse between the completion of your bachelor’s level degree and applying for admission to the master's program.
If you expect to complete your qualifying education after the application deadline, you must enclose a document from the educational institution confirming that your expected time of completion is before the master's programme starts in August 2019.
A bachelor's level degree from DASPA (three or four years) does not constitute a legal entitlement to be admitted to the master’s programme in Performing Arts. All applicants with a qualifying degree must go through the same application process.
In order to apply for the master’s programme in Performing Arts, you will have to fill in an online application form. To fill in the application form you must create an account. Please note that you cannot send your application by email or post.
In order to apply, you must:
- Provide the required personal information in the form
- Attach a photo of your face only (to be used in the application process)
- Upload your CV (text only, no photos or scan) (max. 2 pages). The purpose of the CV is to provide a chronological overview of your educational background, your artistic projects and other relevant experience.
- Upload evidence of qualifying education or confirmation of expected completion of qualifying education.
- Upload a personal portfolio exhibiting selected examples of your artistic practice. The portfolio is your opportunity to show us who you are as an artist. The portfolio does not have to consist of a single document, but can be separate text, image, audio, and video files. All files must be uploaded in the application portal, where the restrictions on formats and sizes are specified. Alternatively, a document can be uploaded with links to online material. We encourage you to select the projects that you consider most relevant to the master's programme in performing arts.
- A description of your motivation and professional goals (max. 2 pages). The description should start from the following questions:
- What is your primary motivation for applying for the programme?
- What opportunities do you see for yourself in the link between your artistic practice and the focus of the specialization(s)?
- Which subject areas would you like to have the opportunity to focus on during the education?
- What immediate thoughts do you have about the international semester? Could you imagine using it for exchange at another educational institution or for a project or internship?
All information must be given in English.
A fee of DKK 570 will be charged when applying for admission. The fee covers expenses of the audition process. When applying online you will be redirected to a payment site. Your application is only valid once the fee has been paid. The application fee is non-refundable once the application deadline has passed.
Based on an assessment of the qualifying education and the documents in the application in relation to the assessment criteria, the admission committee selects a limited number of applicants to come for audition. Applicants will be notified on March 6, 2020. If you are not invited for the audition, the admission panel will not be able to give individual feedback.
AUDITION FOR CONCEPTUALIZING, CREATING, COLLABORATING
The auditions for Conceptualizing, Creating, Collaborating will take place in Copenhagen between March 23 and March 27, 2020. The audition consists of practical tasks in groups and an individual interview. The practical tasks focus on reflection and collaboration in relation to an artistic process. The audition for this specialisation requires the applicant to be present at the school. The individual interview gives the committee the opportunity to enquire about the application and the portfolio. The interview will last about 30-45 minutes.
AUDITION FOR CREATING PRACTICE
The audition for Creating Practice will take place in Aarhus on March 14 and 15, 2020. The audition consists of an individual interview. The individual interview gives the committee the opportunity to enquire about the application and the portfolio. The interview will last about 30-45 minutes.
Applicants will be notified of whether they are admitted into the programme or not at the beginning of April, 2020.
If you are not admitted to the programme after the audition, you will be offered individual feedback. You will be notified about this option in an email.
The Admissions Committee consists of:
- The Rector of DASPA
- An external examiner appointed by the Ministry of Culture
- A teacher
- A master student from DASPA
For each specialisation, there is a subcommittee consisting of:
- The person responsible for the specialisation
- One or more teachers from the specialisation
- A master student from DASPA
The admission committee emphasizes various qualities in their assessment, including that the applicant:
- has a high professional level and potential for artistic development and collaboration within the performing arts.
- can demonstrate a high level of reflection in relation to the documentation regarding their own artistic practice.
- has thought about the goals, the structure, and the learning objectives of the master's programme.
- has clear professional goals and artistic ambitions that can be realized within the framework of the master's programme in performing arts.
The applicant does not necessarily need to possess all the mentioned qualities, the above should be understood as guidelines for what the admission panel prioritizes in the selection. The admission panel may also pay attention to the group constellation.
The admission process and the interviews will be in English. In the audition, the admission committee will assess the applicants’ level of oral English. If the admission panel is not convinced that an applicant has a sufficient level of English to complete the programme, they might ask for detailed documentation of the applicant’s proficiencies in English.
The admission panel will select a number of applicants from the audition that have not been admitted to the programme but still remain eligible for the programme. These applicants could be contacted should one of the selected candidates not accept the spot. There will not be a priority list, as the admission panel may also pay attention to the group constellation in order to make the decision.
Appeals against the decision of the admissions committee can be made via the Rector of the Danish School of Performing Arts. This must be done within two weeks of receiving the decision. The Rector adjudicates the complaint and provides any further guidance concerning complaint procedures. If the complaint concerns the academic decision on admission to the programme, the decision cannot be appealed further. If the complaint concerns legal issues such as disqualification or compliance with the deadline for submitting applications, the Rector's decision may be appealed via the Minister of Culture within two weeks of receiving the Rector's decision.
In all admission test processes, the admission committee makes notes on the applicants' performance which are used in the event of a complaint against the admission committee. The notes are saved for at least one year or until a complaint procedure is completed.
