APPLICATION GUIDE MASTER IN CHOREOGRAPHY
APPLY FOR THE MASTER IN CHOREOGRAPHY
Every other year DASPA enrols 4-6 students into the Master’s Programme in Choreography in Copenhagen.
APPLICATION
It is no longer possible to apply for the Master’s Programme in Choreography starting in August 2024. The application deadline was 15 March 2024.
Have you already applied for the programme, you can read about the admission process below.
The entry requirement for the study programme is a passed admission test as well as a degree in dance and choreography at a Bachelor’s level, or equivalent, from DASPA or another relevant higher education institution*.
If you expect to complete your qualifying education after the application deadline, you must enclose a document from the educational institution confirming that your expected completion time is before your study start in August.
*Bachelors in Dance and Choreography from DASPA do not automatically qualify for admission but have to go through the admission procedure.
FIRST SELECTION
Based on an assessment of the documents in the application in relation to the assessment criteria, the admission committee selects a limited number of applicants to come for interviews. If you are not invited to join the interview, the admission panel will not be able to give individual feedback.
INDIVIDUAL INTERVIEWS AND GROUP SESSION
The interviews take place on 2-3 May 2024 and each applicant needs to be present for one of those days. Each applicant will be interviewed for a duration of about one hour and at the end of the day, there will be a group session together with all the applicants of that day (approximately five). The group session will involve improvisational tasks and choreographic scores.
If you are not admitted to the programme after the interview, you will be offered individual feedback.
LANGUAGE
The admission process and the interviews will be in English.
The admission committee consists of the Head of the Choreography programme, and at least one student representative, faculty teacher and external jury member, approved by the Danish Ministry of Culture.
The admission committee looks for the following qualities:
- Readiness to assimilate the programme.
- Well-developed knowledge of the subject area and potential for further development.
- Ability to clearly articulate ideas through movement, speech, and text.
- Willingness and capacity to navigate within abstraction and complexity.
- Communicative and collaborative skills.
- Capacity to self-organise.
- Ability to present a plan of the physical and choreographic questions that the applicant wants to explore during the studies. The plan should be feasible within the programme structure.
The applicant does not necessarily need to possess all the mentioned qualities, the above should be understood as guidelines for what the admission committee prioritises in the selection. The admission committee may also pay attention to the group constellation.
language
In the interview, the admission committee will assess the applicants’ level of oral English. If the admission committee is not convinced that an applicant has a sufficient level of English to complete the programme, they might ask for detailed documentation of the applicant’s proficiencies in English.
The admission committee will notify those applicants from the interviews that have not been admitted to the programme but still remain eligible for the programme in case a selected candidate would not accept the spot. There will not be a priority list, as the admission committee may also pay attention to the group constellation in order to make the decision.
Appeals against the decision of the admissions committee can be made via the Rector of the Danish School of Performing Arts. This must be done within two weeks of receiving the decision. The Rector adjudicates the complaint and provides any further guidance concerning complaint procedures. If the complaint concerns the academic decision on admission to the programme, the decision cannot be appealed further. If the complaint concerns legal issues such as incapacity or compliance with the deadline for submitting applications, the Rector's decision may be appealed via the Minister of Culture within two weeks of receiving the Rector's decision.
