Professor i scenekunst

Solveig Gade, dramaturge and scholar in theatre and performance, is professor in Performing Arts and Head of Education at the master’s programme at The Danish National School of Performing Arts. 

Since completing her master’s degree in Scandinavian Literature and Theatre Studies from the University of Copenhagen and Aarhus in 2000, Solveig has persistently sought to combine theory and practice working both as a theatre scholar and a dramaturge. She earned her PhD in Theatre and Performance Studies from the University of Copenhagen in 2008 for a thesis on performative and interventionist strategies in contemporary theatre and visual art (published in 2010 by Politisk revy under the title Intervention og kunst). Subsequently, she served as a dramaturge at the Royal Danish Theatre (2008-2014). In 2014 she embarked on a post doc project at the University of Copenhagen, and from 2016 to 2019 she was an Associate Professor at the Department of Dramaturgy at Aarhus University, where she taught courses in Dramaturgy, Applied Dramaturgy, Theatre Practice, and Theatre and Performance Theory.

Artistic Practice

Since 2000 Solveig has dramaturged around 30 theatre performances. From 2008-2014 she worked in the literary department and as a production dramaturge at The Royal Danish Theatre, where she collaborated with directors, collectives, and playwrights such as Elisa Kragerup, Rune David Grue, Det Røde Rum, Christian Lollike, Corpus, Michael Thalheimer, Katrine Wiedemann, Emmet Feigenberg, and Nielsen. Since 2014 she has been on the artistic advisory board of Aarhus Theatre, and since 2017 she has been affiliated with the artistic board of the Betty Nansen Theatre.

  • The Work of Wonders: On Art, Faith, and Terrorism (written and directed by Christian Lollike), Odsherred Theatre+Katapult, 2005.


In addition to her studies at the universities of Copenhagen and Aarhus, Solveig has undertaken studies at Freie University in Berlin, Cornell University, and Tisch School of the Arts (Department for Performance Studies).

Her research centres on experimental and post-dramatic strategies in contemporary theatre and performance and the ways in which these strategies respond to their surrounding political contexts. In her current research project, she focuses on war and conflict in the post 9-11 era as depicted in contemporary documentary performance, dance, and visual art. Employing an inter-disciplinary approach, the project investigates the critical potential of the twisted documentary strategies developed by artists as diverse as Rabih Mroué, Arkadi Zaides, Rimini Protokoll, Lawrence Abu Hamdan, Laura Poitras, Milo Rau, and Hito Steyerl.

Selected journals in which Solveig’s research has appeared include: Performance Research, TDR: The Drama Review, Nordic Theatre Studies, Nordic Journal of Aesthetics, The Journal of War and Culture Studies, K&K, Passage, Peripeti, and Kritik.

Together with Daniela Agostinho, Nanna Bonde Thylstrup and Kristin Veel, Solveig is currently editing the book (W)archives, which will be published with Sternberg Press in 2020.



In 2018 Solveig was honoured by the Danish Arts Foundation for her production dramaturgy on Orlando at the Betty Nansen Theatre.

In 2016 she was awarded as Teacher of the Year at the Faculty of Humanities, University of Copenhagen.

In 2008 she received the Laureates Routledge Prize for best PhD candidate paper presentation at the annual Performance Studies international conference.
